What to expect at your first class

Here’s how your first pole or aerial class runs, from the minute you arrive to the final stretch.

Walking into a new studio is the hardest bit, so here’s what happens once you’re through the door. Everyone on the other side of it remembers exactly how it felt to be new, and your instructor will make sure you feel welcome from the start.

Finding us

Look for the teal blue door, directly opposite the main entrance to the Hop Kettle pub in Cirencester town centre. Go through the door, head up the stairs and turn left at the top. It’s up some stairs, so it isn’t wheelchair accessible.

We recommend parking in the Waterloo Car Park, which is the closest, and we’ve got a video showing how to find the studio from there. You’ll find that, the full directions and other parking options on our finding us page.

How the class runs

  1. Arrive 5–10 minutes early. The studio opens 5–10 minutes before class, so there’s no rush. Leave your coat, your shoes and your worries at the door and come on in.
  2. Say hello. Your instructor will welcome you, introduce themselves and check you off on the register. They’ll go over the house rules and show you where to find everything in the studio, so you’re not left wondering where to put your bag.
  3. Warm up. We start with a fun, gentle warm-up of around five minutes, to get your joints mobile and your muscles ready to work.
  4. Conditioning. We finish the warm-up with some conditioning moves, to really activate the muscles we’re about to use, make sure you’re moving safely, and get you thinking about technique.
  5. Onto the equipment. Your instructor breaks each move down step by step, then comes round to help each person individually while you practise. We have up to 2 people per pole and up to 3 people per hoop, so you get a bit of rest between moves too, especially in busier sessions. In a mixed ability class they might give different people different moves, depending on who’s in the room and the level they’re working at, so you’ll never be asked to go too hard too fast. If you’re not sure about something, or you need a modification or something else to work on, just ask your instructor. It’s not a problem.
  6. Cool down. We finish with a gentle cool down, to stretch out the muscles we’ve worked.

There’s no pressure to keep moving constantly – just take the class at your own pace and take breaks when you need them.

After your class

It’s normal to have sore muscles afterwards, sometimes for a few days. It’s your body telling you that you worked hard! It’s also normal to get a bit of bruising here and there while your body gets used to some of the moves and grip points. And feeling on top of the world once you’ve finished? That’s completely normal too.
